Start Keyword Research By Understanding The Client’s Needs
Before starting keyword research, it’s best to understand the client’s needs and goals. That way you know what to keep in mind and note while doing it.
More competition means more effort. Less competition means less effort.
Chima explains that the more competitive the desired keyword is, the more effort you’ll have to put to rank.
Content Optimization starts from the content brief.
Flesh out the content brief. Understand what assets that need to be added. It could be an image pack, a review style, video carousel either as feature snippets.
Competitor Pages Can be A Sales Enablement Tool
Chima mentions that competitor pages can be very useful as an asset not just for your cluster, or not just for keyword research, but also as a sales enablement tool.
So when it’s two different competitors, what you do is that you write the content from an objective point of view, and then you use the conclusion to sell your product and tell the reader why you are better than both of these competitors.

All right, awesome. Now when I want to do keyword research, usually when clients come to me, they have what I like to call, they have a very broad idea of what they’re trying to target. A very, very broad idea. They don’t have like, they’ve not narrowed it down, basically. So for example, I’m going to use myself as an example, when I was starting out, the biggest mistake I made, was targeting the wrong keywords.
I just assumed that I could target copywriting agency, I didn’t really think about the fact that cooperating agency meant that I was an agency or I’m not an agency, I’m just one person wanting a content writing business. So when I will generate clients, they will be asking for videos, there’ll be axing for every podcast, dude wants emails and want the full circle of what a corporate agency could provide you. They wanted everything. And most of the stuff they were asking for, or stuff I wasn’t doing. I was also ranking for landing page copywriter, website copywriter, I was ranking for a lot of keywords that I wasn’t really interested in doing.
And then when I decided to, to niche down in SEO content, in a way it was kind of late, because I did the beauty authority around those other keywords. So it’s harder for me now, to rank for these keywords I’m trying to target because I already have so much authority in a completely different area. So back to the client side of it. When a client is trying to rank for a keyword Your job is to help them narrow it down. I always start the conversation by asking the client, what is the one word the one thing you want people to think of when they hear your brand name. That is where you start from. So let’s say an example now a client comes to you and say I want to I do project management’s and I want to refer to project management the key word project management, let’s see what that looks like project management. Now this is project management, look at how much searches it’s get. It’s getting like 550,000 monthly searches.
That is a lot of searches. Okay? If anyone is trying to target this keyword, it’s gonna take you years, I’m talking Yes, to even come close to ranking for this keyword. What if the client starts to narrow it down? Then it starts to you start to see less keywords but it also means that you have more chances so if they’re in the SAS space, they’re probably targeting something like project management software or project management platform Do you understand and then I’m looking for some Yes Now if this was a new business I would go after this because this has less keywords and which would mean that probably less competition and there is also a study traffic for it. Now put it management software on the other hand, other than CCK keywords similar competition more traffic so since it has similar competition, it means that it’s probably going to take as much effort

So why not go for the keyword that has more search volume. So now I have a topic my topic is project management software. That is what I’m going to go after. Now that I have this topic The next thing I want to see is who is ranking for this keyword because I always like to start my computer research which I always like to start with Computer Research When doing keyword research.
So I’m going to look at all of this and this is how I’m going to eliminate PC mag very generally is the most of the reviews so I don’t want to use them for Computer Research. That’s where I like to start with because I want something that is as salient as possible, I want something I want to pick the the keywords that are most relevant to our topic. So our topic is What project management software. Okay, now I want to start here. And then I want to whittle down that list. So see, now here’s the thing I leave with with SEMrush. If I do the same thing here, filter by keyword.
Filter by keyword. Now I can I can I can highlight, I can start to filter that choose what I find most useful from here and add them to a keyword list of SEMrush. Okay, so as I picked this keywords, I’ll try to explain my reasoning for choosing each of these keywords. So that you can also use that when you’re doing keyword research. And then you can use that to do what to pick the right keywords to target.
